The recently released Nokia 7.2 is a marked update on last year’s 7.1 and offers great value for money at the budget end of the smartphone spectrum. From the bigger screen to the upgraded camera, the 7.2 is well worth considering if you don’t want to fork out for a flagship smartphone.
So, let’s start with the screen. It is a 6.3” LCD panel with 2280 X 1080 resolution. Being LCD, as opposed to OLED, the contrast isn’t as strong, but it still delivers bright colors that look impressive on a budget phone.
The screen bezels are thin and there is only a slight chin at the bottom – big enough to fit the Nokia name. While at the top, Nokia has opted for a teardrop, rather than Apple-style notch, that doesn’t eat up too much screen.
What’s inside
With a Qualcomm 600 chipset, 4GB RAM backed up by 64GB of storage and the capability to add a micro SD card to expand it further, it has enough power and storage for most users. Powered by an expanded capacity 3500 mAh battery, that will get you through the day, it will take about 2 hours to fully charge it. Sadly, wireless charging is not available.
The 7.2 also ships with Android One, which is the closest thing you can get to standard Android on a non-Google smartphone. It also means you will get security and OS updates quicker than those with Samsungs and Huaweis etc.
Zeiss camera array
Lastly, we come to the camera. This is an impressive looking circular array with 3 cameras. The main lens is a massive 48MP, backed up with an 8MP ultra-wide and 5MP depth-sensor for your bokeh blur, all controlled by Zeiss optics. There is also a 20MP front-facing selfie camera.
While the 48MP main lens sounds impressive, it actually takes pictures as 12 MP. With plenty of light it will take well exposed and detailed images but the built-in Night mode struggles to give the quality you will get on more expensive handsets.
