Handset focus – iPhone 11

The recently announced iPhone 11, while not quite garnering the same hysteria as previous releases, still attracted a fair amount of publicity, that any other phone manufacturer would die for. So, was it worth the wait? Well, this time there are 3 models: the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

From the front there is no discernible difference to the last iPhone release with the notch now looking a little dated when compared to the more recent releases from Samsung and Huawei. It is only when you turn the phone over that the changes become apparent.

The difference is the camera

Basically, most of the update effort on the iPhone 11 seems to have been expended on the camera. Whilst the introductory iPhone 11 has a dual camera, the Pro and Pro Max have a 3-lens array, the layout of which has attracted a fair few amusing pictures on the internet.

So, let’s look a little more closely at the camera setup, starting with the iPhone 11. This has a dual camera setup with a 12MP f/1.8 wide lens and an ultrawide 12MP f/2.4. Where all 3 models score over the XR is the new Night Mode. This illuminates dark shots to produce a useable image and comes complete with image stabilisation to counter the slower shutter speeds it needs to use.

The iPhone Pro has a smaller screen than the 11 (5.8” compared to 6.1”) but it is an XDR OLED one that produces pin sharp resolution. On the back it has a triple camera array, with a 12MP f/2.0 telephoto lens added to the iPhone 11’s dual setup. The Pro Max is virtually identical to the Pro but has a larger 6.5” screen.
