Xiaomi 9T Pro – excellent value for money

The 9T Pro is another in a long line of Xiaomi smartphones that offer premium specs at mid-range prices. Released in August 2019 it is likely (at the time of writing) to be superseded by an updated model soon. So, the prices are likely to drop further as time goes on, even though the handset itself still has bang up-to-date features that will keep you happy for another year or two.

Uninterrupted Super AMOLED screen

So, let’s get down to specifics, starting as we always do in these quick reviews with the screen. This is a 6.39” Super AMOLED with an 86% screen to body ratio, 403 PPI and a 19.5:9 ratio. It is made of Gorilla Glass 5 to protect it from scratches, as is the back, all held together with an aluminum frame, giving it a weight of 191g and a premium look and feel.

Inside is a fast Snapdragon 855 processor, more than enough to take care of most people’s needs. The 9T Pro is available with 6 or 8GB of RAM and 64, 128 or 256GB of non-expandable storage. Battery is a more than adequate 4000 mAh with 27W fast charging. Finally, it ships with Android 9 and Xiaomi’s own MIUI 10 skin.

Top notch camera and funky selfie unit

The main camera is setup is an impressive triple array that produces great photos in both day and night. It consists of a main 48MP f/1.8 wide main lens, a 8MP f/2.4 telephoto and a 13MP f/2.4 ultrawide. These are arranged vertically in the centre of the back, with the flash below.

The selfie camera is a rather funky motorised popup with LEDs at the side to make it really stand out. This is a 20MP f/2.2 wide unit that will give shots good enough for most people. This also means that the screen is completely uninterrupted with no notches or cut-outs to detract.

Compelling choice

Available in Carbon black, Red flame and Glacier Blue, it can be picked up now (Mar 2020) for around the £350 mark, making it great value for money for such a premium handset.

Is it for you? Well, the combination of premium feel, fast processor and excellent camera certainly make it a compelling choice and well worth considering. Course, if you want to really impress your friends with something different, the motorised pop-up selfie camera makes it worthwhile on its own!
