The Xiaomi Redmi sub-brand has always been about producing well built and specified phones on a budget and although it has tended to move upmarket in the last few years, this has always underpinned its offerings.
So, it is good to see a return to its core values with the Redmi 9 a great smartphone for under £150. We recently looked at 5 great smartphones for under £150, and the Redmi 9 featured on it.
Looks and feels good in the hand
Starting, as always with the looks of the handset. It has a large 6.53 LCD screen with an 83.2% screen to body ratio, 1080p resolution, 395ppi density and 400 nits typical brightness. All pretty decent for a budget priced handset.
It has a Gorilla glass 3 front, plastic back and frame. This means it weighs in at a hefty 198g (caused by the big battery) and feels pretty solid and premium in the hand.
Massive battery and good internals
Inside there is a good enough Helio G80 processor, Android 10 with MIUI 12 on top. There are three variants of the phone available, 3GB of RAM with 32GB of storage, 4GB of RAM with 64GB of storage and a top of the line 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage. The storage for all three options is expandable via a MicroSD card.
The Redmi 9 also has a decent list of other features including, a single loudspeaker, 3.5mm headphone jack, NFC and an infrared port so you can control your TV and other devices from your phone.
Finally, the battery is a massive 5020 mAh, with 18W fast charging. This should be big enough to keep you going all day and beyond!
5 cameras for all your snaps
The Redmi 9 comes with a quad rear array camera, which is pretty good at this end of the market. These are arranged vertically in a black pill-shaped mount positioned top centre of the back. This array consists of a main 13MP f/2.2, 28mm wide lens with PDAF, an 8MP f/2.2 ultrawide, 5MP f/2.4 macro and 2MP f/2.4 depth. Video can be shot at 1080p at 30 fps. This overall setup matches those on more expensive handsets and represents good value in the budget sector.
On the front is a single selfie camera positioned in a central teardrop notch. This is an 8MP f/2.0, 27mm wide unit that can also take 1080p video at 30 fps.
Ticks all the boxes
Available in Carbon Grey, Sunset Purple, Ocean Green and Pink/Blue this is a great value phone in the entry level sector of the smartphone market. It will tick all the boxes for many people (looks good, premium build, 5 cameras and a big battery) and will be a phone you won’t be afraid to be seen with.
