Redmi K30 Pro – great 5G phone that is not too expensive

Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi recently announced its successor to their 2019 flagship the K20. The unoriginally named K30 Pro follows in its footsteps as a competitively priced premium handset that is well worth considering if you do not want to spend more than £500 for an excellent smartphone.

Before we look at the specs it is worth mentioning that although it is not in the name (unlike most other handsets) the K30 Pro does support 5G. So, as always starting with the screen. This is a 6.67” Super AMOLED unit with an 87.2% screen-to-body ratio. It has a 1080p resolution, 395PPI density and a maximum brightness of 500 nits.

Because the selfie camera is concealed in a motorised pop-up unit, the screen is completely clear of any interruptions and looks stunning. It is protected by Gorilla Glass 5, as is the back and with an aluminium frame gives it a weight of 218g and a solid and premium feel in the hand. Due to the pop-up selfie, there is no IP68 dust/water certification protection, so do not drop it in the sink!

0 to 100% charge in just over an hour

Inside it ships with Android 10 and the Xiaomi MIUI 11 OS on top all driven by the class leading Snapdragon 865 processor. Available with 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of non-expandable storage, the K30 Pro also has a single loudspeaker and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The fingerprint scanner is an under-display type and this all powered by a hefty 4700 mAh, 33W fast charging battery that reportedly goes from 0 to 100% charge in just over an hour.

Good camera array of wide, telephoto, ultrawide and depth

The rear camera array is quad and is arranged in a black circular unit located top centre. It has (what is for 2020) the ideal combination of a main 64MP wide, 5MP telephoto macro, 13MP ultrawide and 2MP depth. Based on previous Xiaomi/Redmi cameras, this setup is likely to give good quality images across the range.

As mentioned above the selfie camera is on a motorised pop-up unit on the left-hand side. It also includes a built in LED flash and is 20MP wide unit that can also take 1080p videos at 30 frames per second.

Available for under £500

Available in four colours, Grey, Purple, White and Blue, at the time of writing the K30 Pro can be picked up from under £500 making it a good option if you are looking for a premium flagship 5G smartphone without wanting to break the bank.
