Huawei P Smart 2019 – good value for money at less than £150

Although it was announced way back in Dec 2018, which is a lifetime in smartphone terms, the Huawei P Smart 2019 is still a decently specified handset for a sub £150 price. Furthermore, because it was released before the US Government ban caused Google to withdraw its Play Services from Huawei, you can still get the Google Play store and all the other useful and free apps like Maps and Gmail on this phone.

Like most phones in this price bracket it has a cheaper LCD screen rather than AMOLED. This one is 6.21” and offers an 83.1% screen to body ratio, a 1080p resolution (most handsets at this price are 720p) and a reasonable 415 ppi density. With a glass screen (not Gorilla), plastic back and frame it weighs 160g and feels pretty solid and premium in the hand.

Good enough internals

It ships with Android Pie; this is not quite the most up to date version (10) and uses Huawei’s own Kirin 710 chipset with a Mali-G51 MP4 GPU. It has 3GB of RAM and you can have 32 or 64GB storage options. Both these are expandable via a microSD card in the shared SIM slot.

The P Smart 2019 has a single, bottom-mounted loudspeaker, 3.5mm headphone jack, FM radio and supports NFC for contactless payments. There is a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and the battery is a reasonably sized 3400 mAh with 10W charging.

Three cameras in total

Most handsets in this price bracket have a single rear camera, the good news is the P Smart 2019 has two. These are positioned top left, arranged vertically in a black, pill-shaped mount. The 2 lens’ are a main 13MP f/1.8 with PDAF and a 2MP depth. On the front, the selfie camera is positioned centrally in a U-shaped notch. This is a 16MP f/2.0 unit. Both front and rear cameras take 1080p video at 30fps, the back will also do it at 60fps.
