Xiaomi Redmi 10X range – 2 great handsets for those on a budget

Xiaomi and its sub-brands Redmi and Poco have so many ranges of smartphones that it’s a wonder they can keep track of them all and continuously update them. This makes it even more difficult for the buyer to work out where the various models fit into the overall scheme of things.

So, we come to the just released Redmi 10X range. As there was no Redmi 9X or plain 10 to compare this new model to we will just look at both handsets in the range – the entry level 10X and the 10X Pro. The expected pricing of these handsets puts them very clearly in the lower mid-range end of the market and as such they have some great features for the price.

Big AMOLED screen and all glass build

Both models have the same big 6.57” AMOLED screen with an 83.7% screen to body ratio, 1080p resolution, 401pp density and 600 nits typical brightness. All pretty good for a low-mid ranger. The good news continues with a Gorilla Glass 5 front and back, meaning the 10X weighs in at 205g and the Pro at 208g (probably caused by the extra camera – see below). This gives a solid feel in the hand coupled with a premium build quality that we have come to expect from Xiaomi.

5G support and a good-sized battery

Inside we have the new Dimensity 820 5G processor (yes both phones support 5G) and 6 or 8GB RAM options for the 10X with 64, 128 or 256GB of expandable storage. The Pro only has an 8GB RAM option with 128 or 256GB of expandable storage.

Both handsets have a single loudspeaker, 3.5mm headphone jack, support for 24-bit/292kHz audio and an FM radio. The Pro has support for NFC, which the 10X does not. Finally, on the internals, a 4520 mAh battery powers both phones, but while the 10X gets 22.5W fast charging this is upped to 33W for the Pro. This will give you 58% juice in 30 mins. Not bad if you are looking for a quick power up.

Great camera setup on the Redmi 10X Pro

The camera setup on the 10X is pretty standard for a low-end mid-ranger with a 48MP f/1.8, 26mm wide with PDAF, 8MP f/2.2 ultrawide and a 2MP f/2.4 depth lens. These are positioned centrally in a rectangular black unit.

The Pro gets an upgrade to the 10X by adding an 8MP telephoto lens with PDAF, OIS and 3X optical zoom. The depth lens is also switched for a 5MP macro one. This combination is pretty impressive for a phone at this price mark and should produce good shots in both daylight and night.

Both the 10X and Pro can shoot video at 4K, 1080p and 720p. On the front, positioned in a central teardrop notch is an 16MP f/2.3 wide lens on the 10X and 20MP wide on the Pro.

Good value for money options

Available in Blue, Gold and Pink/Blue there is no confirmation of the final prices yet, but the Pro is expected to come in around the £300 mark, with the 10X some £80 or so less. Either way, these are 2 great value for money handsets if you are looking for 5G, premium quality and good features on a budget.
