Top 5 features for smartphones in 2020

It’s getting to that time of the year when people dust off their crystal balls and try and predict what will happen in 2020. Well, here at RCUK, we are no different and so have decided to put down what we expect to see in the smartphone world next year. So, our top 5 predictions are:

  1. Bigger and better screens – Samsung have already released their folding screen Galaxy, so expect Apple, Huawei and the rest to do so soon. Others are going different ways, such as the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha with their wrap-round screen and LG with their dual-screen approach. But it is not just size that will change with both 4K and bezel-less screens impacting the way that smartphones will look in 2020.
  2. More powerful cameras – we are already seeing 4 lens arrays and soon the Nokia Pureview will launch with an incredible 5. But it is not just number the lenses that will increase. The resolution of pictures is increasing all the time with Samsung recently announcing a 108MP lens – a bit more than the average 12MP most smartphones use know. Also, expect further improvements in the camera processing software to produce great shots, irrespective of light conditions.
  3. Longer lasting battery – Let’s face it, it is a pain having to charge your smartphone every day. Life would be so much easier if we had a battery that lasted days or weeks or charged within minutes. Currently, the average battery is around 3,000 mAh. For next year expect to see even bigger ones with 5,000 mAH batteries now starting to make an appearance. Also, in what could be a real game-changer, Samsung is supposed to be working on a Graphene battery that can fully charge in 12 minutes!
  4. 5G – the roll-out of 5G in 2020 will mean that phones will need to support it to ensure you can get the best out of the new speeds it offers. Currently, 5G phones are different and more costly models. Expect them to become mainstream during next year.
  5. Improved Artificial Intelligence (AI) – Google Assistant, Apple Siri and Samsung Bixby will all increase in sophistication and usability as more is invested in them and AI generally improves.

So, let’s see which of these comes true in 2020.
