Nokia 4.2 – classy style but not brilliant performance

Released mid-way through 2019, the Nokia 4.2 is very much a budget smartphone but with an up market feel to it. Sadly, this appearance let down by not very good performance when you start to do anything other than light use.

Let’s start by looking at the basics. It has a glass front and rear to give it the premium feel, encased in a plastic frame and weighing in at 161g. It is available in black, pink or sand colours. The 5.7” LCD screen has a teardrop notch top centre for the selfie camera and the screen itself is well pushed towards the frame giving it a 77% screen to body ratio, not bad for such a budget priced phone.

Unfortunately, this screen does not provide a good quality display due to a low pixel count and lack of vivid colour reproduction.

Decent internals for a budget smartphone

The Nokia 4.2 is powered by the entry level Snapdragon 439 processor backed up by either 16GB of storage with 2GB of RAM or 32GB of storage and 3GB of RAM. An adequate combination for an entry level smartphone and if you need more storage you can add a microSD card up to 400GB capacity.

A 3000 mAh battery allows you to get through two days if you only use it lightly for things like calls, Web browsing and messaging. But, for anything more the battery will drain pretty quickly. It is also worth bearing in mind that charging is slow due the fact that the Nokia 4.2 only has a micro USB port, rather the more common USB-C, which will accept fast charging.

Dual lens camera

Finally, let’s have a look at the camera setup on the Nokia 4.2. On the rear it has dual lens main array. This consists of a 13MP, f/2.2 main lens backed up by a 2MP depth sensor. These produce pretty good snaps for a budget phone with natural colours. The camera app even has a Pro mode allowing budding photographers to tinker with all the settings to get the desired effect. With regards to the selfie camera, this is an 8MP f/2.0 lens.

Other features worth mentioning. Access to the Nokia 4.2 is protected by a rear mounted fingerprint sensor that sits centrally below the camera array. The phone also has a 3.5mm headphone jack, something of a rarity these days when everyone is going wireless. It also has a dedicated Google Assistant button on the left-hand edge as well as shipping with Android Pie on the Android One program. This means you are guaranteed rapid updates and security patches for 2 years.

So. Is the Nokia 4.2 for you? Well if you are looking for a good quality budget priced phone and are not going to work it too hard, the Nokia 4.2 certainly looks the part.
