Nokia 1.3 – entry level smartphone for those on a tight budget

The Nokia 1.3 is an entry level smartphone for those on a budget. It sits at the bottom end of Nokia’s smartphone range and was released in April 2020.

It comes with a 5.7” LCD screen with a relatively low 77.6% screen to body ratio. This is because of a wider than usual bottom bezel with the Nokia name in it, and a U-shaped notch at the top for the selfie camera. This screen has a resolution of 720p and 295ppi density and a 400 nits typical brightness setting. Not class leading, but what do you expect for a budget-priced phone?

Removable battery

The 1.3 has a plastic back and frame, meaning it weighs in at only 155g. It ships with Android 9 (Pie) Go edition. This is the cut down version of Android for phones with less RAM. The chipset is a quad core Qualcomm QM215 and this is supported by 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage that is expandable via a microSDXC card.

There is a single speaker, 3.5mm headphone jack and FM radio included. The whole thing is powered by a removable 3000 mAh battery. It is unusual to get a removable battery in a smartphone these days. So, kudos to Nokia for offering this here as it allows you to carry a spare in your pocket for a quick swap if you run out of juice during the day.

Two cameras

Finally, onto the cameras. There is a single rear camera this an 8MP autofocus lens positioned top centre in the back above the LED flash. Obviously, you are not going to get the range of shots you get from a multi-array camera setup, but for the odd snap in decent lighting you should get reasonable pictures. This camera can also take 720p video at 30 frames per second.

On the front, positioned centrally in the U-shaped notch in the top bezel is a 5MP camera for your selfies. This also has its own LED flash and can take 720p video at 30 frames per second as well.

Competitively priced

Available in Cyan, Charcoal and Sand, you can pick up the Nokia 1.3 for just under £80. Not bad for a Nokia branded smartphone with a near 6” screen running Android Pie and sporting 2 cameras!
