Motorola One – a decent mid-range all-rounder

The One in the name of this phone refers to Android One, for which this phone is part of the program. For those not in the know, Android One is the out-of-the-box Google version of Android without the manufacturer updates most versions have.

This means that any smartphone running Android One will get the important security and functionality updates when Google release them. This is instead of having to wait for the handset manufacturer to schedule in their own update on their Android modifications. This means that your version of Android will be secure, clean and fast – at all times.

LCD screen and decent battery

The Motorola One has a 5.9” LCD screen with a notch and chin coupled with a with Gorilla glass back. It weighs in at 162g and is only 8mm thick, making it easy to fit in your pocket. Available in black and white, it ships with a 3000 mAh battery that supports 15W fast charging, which will give you 6 hours of use with just a 20-minute charge.

Access to the One is protected by a centrally positioned rear-mounted sensor and there is both a USB-C port and 3.5mm headphone socket on the bottom and top of the phone.

Three cameras

With regards to cameras the Motorola One has dual rear and single front facing ones. The 2 rear ones are aligned vertically at the top left of the back with the flash and sensors sandwiched in between. The main lens is a 13MP f/2.0. This is supported by 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor. These combine to give reasonable daylight shots but not too good in lesser light. You can also video at 4K while the selfie camera is an 8MP f/2.2 unit.

Internals

Inside, the Motorola One is powered by the mid-range Snapdragon 625 chip coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (expandable to 256GB with a MicroSD card). It also has a single speaker positioned on the bottom of the phone.

Coming in at under £150 is the Motorola One worth it? Well, there are a lot of mid-range phones available for this price and each has its own strengths and weaknesses. If you value security, a fast and clean OS and getting upgrades quickly, then the Motorola One is well worth consideration as it is a good all-rounder in all the main functions you look for in a smartphone.
