LG V50 – LG’s first 5G smartphone

The LG V50 is not really much of an upgrade, apart from the 5G capabilities, on the LG V40. So, is it worth the high price currently being asked for it?

Before we answer that question, let’s take a look at what the LG V50 actually offers. The changes over the V40 are a bigger battery, more up-to-date processor and, of course, the 5G modem. This means the overall design has not changed and now looks a little dated with its big bezels and top notch.

Superior sound to virtually any other smartphone

The screen is a 6.4” P-OLED one that gives a very sharp and bright display. It has a Gorilla Glass 5 screen and a Gorilla Glass 6 back encased round an aluminum frame. It weighs in at 183g and is IP68 dust and water resistant for protection. The processor is now the Snapdragon 855, supported by 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (expandable via a MicroSD card to 1TB).

Audio is always a big thing on LG phones and the LG V50 does not let the side down. It has the usual Quad DAC together with DTS:X 3D Surround sound. Listening to music via a wired speaker or headphones (via the 3.5mm headphone jack) the LG V50 produces a superior sound to virtually any other smartphone around currently.

Impressive and sharp images from the cameras

The LG V50 boasts 5 cameras – 3 on the back and 2 on the front. The rear array, which sits flush to the body, consists of a 12MP f/1.5 standard lens, a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto and a 16MP f/1.9 ultrawide. Whilst the selfie camera is a 8MP standard and a 5MP wide lens to fit more of you and your friends in.

This combination of cameras is impressive and delivers sharp images and videos with plenty of special effects for you to play with.

Design looking a little dated

Wrapping up, it has a traditional centrally rear mounted fingerprint sensor and an improved 4000 mAh battery. This comes with Qi fast wireless charging (10W) and wired fast charging at 18W, which will deliver 50% charge in 36 mins.

Is this phone for you? Well, do you want 5G now, at a time when the network in the UK is in its infancy? If you do and you never venture outside London, or the other major UK cities, you will probably consider the LG V50 as it is cheaper than the Samsung S10 5G. But, the V50 is looking a little dated now and really needs a major design refresh considering its premium price.

Might be worth seeing what the G9, due out later this year offers.
