Introduced in 2018, the Apple iPhone XS is virtually identical in looks to the iPhone X. With the same 5.8-inch size screen, the differences lie in a faster processor and better camera performance. This makes it a good choice if you are considering upgrading from an older iPhone like the 6 or 7.
Unlike those earlier iPhones it is water and dust resistant to IP68. It is equipped with a new Apple-designed A12 Bionic processor and 4GB RAM. There are 64, 256 or 512 GB of storage options available.
The battery is a 2,658mAH one, which is marginally smaller than the iPhone X’s. Despite this tests by Macworld reckon that with a lghtish day’s usage, you will have 54% left at the end of the day – from a full charge. The good news is that it supports wireless charging, so you can put it on the charger at night and forget about it till morning!
Camera setup
The XS comes with a 7MP, f/2.2 front camera and a dual rear camera setup. This comprises of 2 X 12MP with f/1.8 for wide-angle shots and f/2.4 for telephoto. The setup delivers 2X optical zoom and 4K video at up to 60 fps.
This combination enables you to take great photographs ably supported by what Apple calls the Neural Engine. This intelligently processes complex lighting conditions to produce the perfect shot and ensures you don’t have to worry about what you snap away at!
Audio & software
Like all iPhones now, there is no headphone jack, but you do get dual (stereo) speakers that have been improved to give a wider sound seperation. It currently (Aug 2019) ships with iOS 12 pre-installed. iOS 13 is due to be launched in Sep 2019 and the XS will be able to run that. So, if you buy the phone now, don’t worry about not being able to upgrade the new OS.
